Barack Obama's president elect, Patrick Swayze is dying, and Lamar's a sea lion. I don't know why you're all so surprised.

I myself wasn't an Obama supporter, but I'm definitely not surprised that Obama's going to be president. He's the more handsome of the two candidates, and he's the first black man to have gotten so far in an election. I'm proud of him for achieving such success, even though I wasn't exactly pleased when I heard the results.

Monday Update: the Revival Begins

Hey, everyone! I am really sad to see iStudent wither away like this, so I am making it my OFFICIAL mission to revive iStudents, one page at a time! Here are some of my ideas to help bring iStudents News page back to life again!

-Hey, we all love News of the Weird! Keep it coming! I'm going to ATTEMPT to make them every Monday and Thursday! Monday is a definite, but if anyone wants to help out on Thursdays, you are more than welcome.

-We all love political cartoons! Found one that's funny? post it! I'll try to keep a regular flow of them coming... maybe every Saturday and Wednesday? And don't worry.... I'll even it out so ALL the candidates get their turn in the spotlight! ;)

National Hobo Convention (???)

The National Hobo Convention is held on the second weekend of every August in the town of Britt, Iowa, organized by the local Chamber of Commerce. The National Hobo Convention is the largest gathering of hobos, rail-riders, and tramps, who gather to celebrate the American traveling worker.

Parade
Traditionally there has been a parade on the Saturday at 10:00 a.m., where everyone can let their hobo spirit soar as they participate in the parade. A phrase that describes the parade is, "Some in rags, some in tags, some in velvet gowns". According to the Chamber of Commerce:
"Whether you're part of this large grand parade, or a spectator, the spirit of the day is sure to capture your mood. Marching bands, queens, business floats, children, adults, and hobos all come down the streets in one long line and share the fun that only a Hobo Convention can provide." Following the parade, mulligan stew is served to hundreds of people in the city park as live entertainment, a carnival, and a flea market give everyone something to do.

Other events
Other events during Hobo weekend include a 5K & 10K Walk/Run, Hobo King & Queen coronation, Hobo Museum, Hobo Auction, Hobo Memorial Service, Flea Market, Sunday Outdoor Church Service, Classic Car Show and various musical entertainment. The Hobo Jungle is open to the public.

LEAD STORY

The divorce of Anton Popazov and his wife, Nataliya, is about to go through, but the couple are still contractually committed to the Moscow State Circus, where their act includes Nataliya's shooting an apple off of Anton's head with a crossbow. The Times of London asked Anton during a show in Sheffield, England, in February whether he was afraid. "I still trust her because Nataliya is very professional," he said. "The show must go on."

Can't Possibly Be True

Two Park Vista High School girls who admitted that they swiped money off the table of a Girl Scout selling cookies at a supermarket in Boynton Beach, Fla., in January told WPBF-TV later that they had no remorse. Said one on camera: "We went through all that effort to get the money. We got all these charges against us, and we had to give the money back. I'm kind of pissed." Added the other, "I'm not sorry. I'm just pissed that I got caught." The victim's mother said that the girls returned to the supermarket the next day and taunted the little girl.

In February, a court in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, sentenced Briton Keith Brown, 43, to the standard four-year minimum term in prison for violating the country's extreme "zero tolerance" drug laws, even though the only drug found was a "speck" (0.003 grams) of cannabis caught in the tread of his shoe and discovered only because the Dubai airport uses sophisticated drug-detection equipment. Previously, a Canadian man was imprisoned for "possession" of three poppy seeds (from a bread roll he had eaten at Heathrow Airport in London) that had fallen into his clothing as he prepared for a flight to Dubai.

Roy Chamberlin, 29, has been charged with 1,100 criminal counts in connection with what Pennsylvania police said was a series of nearly 200 rapes against a married woman in Potter Township (and had his first court hearing in January). According to the police report, the woman said she was too terrified ever to report the crimes to police or to her husband. Once, said the husband, he came home unexpectedly about 9 a.m. and found the bedroom door locked and a struggle occurring inside (hearing "Get off me!" and "You're hurting me!"). After the husband pounded on the door, Chamberlin walked out, leaving the wife "crying hysterically and trembling." However, the husband said that his wife declined to explain the situation and that he didn't question her (not wanting to upset her further, since she had recently had surgery).

Inexplicable

In January, Derry, N.H., Town Administrator Gary Stenhouse told Thomas Souhlaris that he'd have to move his sausage stand because he was trespassing on city property. Souhlaris had set up the stand at the town's garbage transfer station, and Stenhouse said there might be municipal liability issues, especially if other food vendors followed Souhlaris and set up stands at the dump.

In January, Shafkat Munir, 26, was sentenced to 12 months in jail for an attempted hoax in Lancashire County, England, in 2007 after receiving three speeding tickets. Rather than pay the fines, totaling the equivalent of about $350 (and retain his license, since his record was otherwise clean), Munir created his own death certificate to get the charges dismissed. Said an official, "I have never known anyone to go to such lengths (over speeding tickets)." The judge also revoked Munir's license.

Unclear on the Concept

On Nov. 30, for a social justice project at Cheektowaga Central High School (Buffalo, N.Y.), students spent an 18-degree night in cardboard boxes on the school's lawn, in supposed solidarity with the area's homeless population. According to a Buffalo News report, the suffering students brought DVD players to watch movies inside their boxes, ate donated Dunkin' Donuts and pizzas, and ducked into the school's heated gym whenever they got too cold or bored.

Creme de la Weird

In February, on "signing day," when hundreds of highly recruited high school football players announced which colleges they would attend, lineman Kevin Hart of Fernley (Nev.) High School met local reporters with his coach at his side and dramatically chose the University of California over the University of Oregon. However, when the reporters called those colleges' coaches for reactions, they learned that Hart had not been meaningfully recruited by either school, or any other prominent one. Hart explained two days later that he passionately wanted to play at a major school and that when no offer came, "I made up what I wanted to be reality." Hart did not elaborate on what conceivable useful outcome he could have expected from the ruse.

When These People Vote, Theirs Count as Much as Yours

During the media hoopla on Feb. 5, about that day's 24-state "Super Tuesday" "national primary" for president, enthusiastic voters called election offices for the addresses of their polling places so they could run down and vote: 400 called in Virginia (but its primary would be the following week); 1,000 called in Dallas (its primary would be a month later); "hundreds" called in Florida (its primary was the week before). At least six people were lined up to vote by 6:30 a.m. at one precinct in Milwaukee (Wisconsin's primary would be two weeks later).

Recurring Themes

It's not quite the 2006 News of the Weird story of the kindergarten-bound Broward County, Fla., boy diagnosed with gender identity disorder at age 5, but there will apparently still be steep problems for parents, teachers and students in Highlands Ranch, Colo., when a second-grade boy soon enters third grade as a girl. One student's parent said there'll surely be an issue of, "Why are you in a dress this year when you were in pants last year?" Among the school's problems: building unisex restrooms and preventing bullying.

Thinning the Herd

A 39-year-old man fell to his death while trying to slide down a banister in the Hollywood & Highland Center mall in Los Angeles in January.

And three more people died recently as a result of disrespecting railroad tracks: a 42-year-old man, hit by a train on tracks near Burlington, Ill., while listening to his iPod (September).

After 33 Years, Man Recovers Lost Wallet

ELK GROVE, Calif. -- A man lost his wallet over 30 years ago at college, and the institution recently returned it to him. Tom Eichenberg of Elk Grove, Calif., lost his wallet while a student at Santa Clara University in 1975, Sacramento station KCRA reported. Eichenberg said his wallet was lost in the days before identify theft, so he carried his Social Security card with him. It has been sitting in a wall at the student center for 33 years. Construction crews found the wallet recently in an air duct while renovating the student union. Eichenberg doesn't even remember losing it. The contents of the wallet are most certainly his -- an old membership to Fedco, a BART pass with 10 cents left on it, and a 1975 draft card. Eichenberg said he'll put away his wallet for another 33 years.

Post-Surgury Orders Can Include Gum

Researchers have found that chewing gum helps the bowels work properly again after intestinal surgery. They studied 102 patients and gave half of them five pieces of gum each day after their operations. The authors said that people in the chewing group regained their bowel functions significantly faster than those who did not.Those who chewed gum were able to pass gas and have a bowel movement half a day sooner than the control group. However, they said the treatment did not have a significant effect on the length of hospital stays. The authors theorized that chewing may have stimulated muscles as well as the salivary glands and liver. Pediatric urologist Bradley Kropp said he will be giving his patients undergoing reconstructive surgery a piece of gum following their operation. "In today's high-tech, molecular-driven, scientific world, it is nice to come across an article that can be implemented immediately into our practices without increased healthcare cost," he said.

Big Burger? Try 'Absolutely Ridiculous'

SOUTHGATE, Mich. -- Steve Mallie doesn't just make a big burger. His is the "Absolutely Ridiculous Burger." The owner of Mallie's Sports Bar and Grill in suburban Detroit is laying claim to the world record for the "largest hamburger commercially available." His 134-pounder is made with beef, bacon and cheese, and comes on a bun that weighs 50 pounds all by itself. The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press reported the giant burger sells for $350 and takes three guys to flip while cooking. Authenticating Mallie's record claim could take a few weeks.

Police are conducting an internal investigation into an allegation that a lieutenant used his stun gun to shock a cow and shared a videotape of the incident with other department employees. Police Chief Steve Helms said Tuesday the inquiry began after he received a complaint from the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. A letter dated Feb. 11 from PETA representative Stephanie Bell complained that Lt. David Mitchell filmed himself using the electronic stun device on the cow. Electronic stun guns are used as less-lethal weapons to subdue people who pose a threat to officers. Bell said in the letter that Mitchell distributed the video as a joke among friends and co-workers and she notes that animal cruelty is a misdemeanor crime in Arkansas. Helms didn't immediately return a call for comment on Wednesday. City Attorney Ben Lipscomb said Tuesday that the alleged incident happened 2 1/2 years ago, which would be beyond the statute of limitations for misdemeanors. Lipscomb said there would be no point in pursuing a criminal investigation. Helms said a captain in the department will conduct the investigation and Mitchell will remain on regular duty.

Banking Problem?

A man was charged with withdrawing $2 million from an account after a bank confused him with a man who has the same name. Benjamin Lovell was arraigned Tuesday on grand larceny charges. The 48-year-old salesman said he tried to tell officials at Commerce Bank in December that he did not have a $5 million account. Lovell said he was told it was his and he could withdraw the money. Prosecutors said the bank — which advertises itself as America's Most Convenient Bank — confused Lovell with a Benjamin Lovell who works for a property management company. The lesser-funded Lovell gave away some of the withdrawn money and blew some of it on gifts, but lost much of it on bad investments, prosecutors said. The district attorney's office did not immediately have information on his lawyer. Calls left with Commerce Bank on Wednesday were not immediately returned.

Samina Malik, 23, was convicted in a British court in December and given a suspended nine-month sentence for having amassed a large collection of how-to books on terrorism. She came to authorities' attention as the self-described "lyrical terrorist" who writes poetry glorifying the Islamic mujahadeen fighters who specialize in beheadings. (From her "How to Behead": "Tilt the fool's head to its left / Saw the knife back and forth / No doubt that the punk will twitch and scream / Yet continue to slice back and forth.")

Intelligence going downhill

Satellite-navigation is undoubtedly a boon to drivers, but reports are accumulating of incidents in which drivers turned over too much discretion to the technology. For example, in January in Bedford Hills, N.Y., a visiting Silicon Valley computer technician absentmindedly obeyed his car's global positioning system and wound up, stalled, on railroad tracks, where a passing Metro-North train smashed into it (after the man had exited).

Bright Idea

Michael Windisch, proprietor of the Maltermeister Turm restaurant in Goslar, Lower Saxony, Germany, solved what has become a crisis for other restaurants since the state extended a smoking ban in August. Windisch opened three holes in an outer wall so that, in cold weather, a smoker need not venture outside but can stick his head and arms through the holes and puff away while remaining inside (according to a December report in Der Spiegel). Smooth Moves

Josue Herrios-Coronilla, 18, was arrested in Durham, N.C., in January and charged with DUI after he accidentally drove through a yard in a residential neighborhood. He then abandoned his car and hitched a ride, but at a later traffic stop, police identified him by his shoes, in that when he ran out of the yard, he had stepped in several piles of the resident's dogs' droppings.

Satanists and Small-Town Mayors

Mayor Ken Williams resigned in Centerton, Ark. (pop. 2,146), in November and revealed that he is actually Don LaRose, an Indiana preacher who abruptly abandoned his family in 1980 because, he said, satanists had abducted and threatened him, and brainwashed him to rub out details of a murder he supposedly knew about. He said his memory returned only recently, thanks to truth serum.

No Comment

In November the Food and Drug Administration told Smiling Hill Farm of Westbrook, Maine, that it would have to recall all of its egg nog because it did not list "egg" as an ingredient on the label. Federal law requires the listing to protect people with egg allergies from inadvertently consuming foods that they might not have realized contain egg (even products called "egg nog").

No Longer Weird (Why...?)

Adding to the list of stories that were formerly weird but which now occur with such frequency that they must be retired from circulation: The errant animal (often a squirrel) that wanders into an electrical line or substation, kills itself, and thereby plunges a wide neighborhood area into darkness, as in Ashland, Wis., and Auburn, Calif., in November. (Haha, that happened at my old school once. It lost power because a squirrel was electrocuted next to the school. Free day off, with no makeup!)

And the parent who decides to commit a crime (often, shoplifting) with his or her toddler in tow, only to irrationally decide, when spotted by police, to abandon the child and run away, as a panicked Suzette Gruber, 39, did in October, leaving her baby in his stroller after being caught in a T.J. Maxx store in Hartsdale, N.Y.

Here are three new News to last you the weekend! (No update on Sunday)

By far, the Weirdest I have seen...

Once again, a motorist casually traveling on a highway had his vehicle crushed by an airborne cow (this time, near Manson, Wash., in November). The 600-pound cow had fallen off a cliff, totaling the minivan but not injuring the driver, who was quoted in an Associated Press dispatch saying repeatedly, "I don't believe this."

Common Sense Needed

In June, a 17-year-old boy survived but was seriously injured when he fell about 75 feet onto some rocks at California's Mount Diablo State Park. He had climbed over a handrail in order to fake a fall so that his pals could capture the plunge on video to put on his MySpace Web page.

No Comment

In Forst, Germany, in May, as a 43-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy vied in a spitting-for-distance contest from a second-story balcony, the grown-up, trying for extra momentum, thrust himself forcefully up to the railing, launched his saliva, and accidentally fell to his death.

Terrorism: a new low

Three aldermen in Dover, N.J., seem exceptionally apprehensive that the town's gumball machines are easy targets for terrorists to poison their community and have been studying the issue zealously since April. The aldermen have checked all 800 gumball machines in the town of 18,000, gotten rid of the 100 that were unlicensed, and will report to the mayor by Jan. 1 on the town's vulnerability. (The mayor has been mildly supportive of the project, as contrasted with the police chief, who said, "You'd probably win the lottery first" before being victimized by terrorists' gumballs.

Oops...

Wrong Place, Wrong Time: Small-time drug operators, thinking they are keeping a low profile, continue to have their hideouts inadvertently discovered by police. In June, a single-engine plane crash-landed outside a home near Baton Rouge, La., and responding police discovered marijuana plants in the yard.

In September in Escatawpa, Miss., Curtiss Coleman, 53, attempting to dial 411 directory assistance, mistakenly dialed 911, though he immediately hung up. However, police routinely investigate dropped-911 calls and discovered Coleman's methamphetamine lab.

. . . Wow.

After some mild bickering during a delivery at a Wal-Mart in October in Indiana County, Pa., according to police, a Pepsi Cola route man allegedly repeatedly punched a Coca-Cola route man in the face.

Ultimate Literacy is One Step Closer!

Software engineers told Fortune magazine in November that they are constructing a filter to eliminate stupid messages to online forums and bulletin boards. Lead researcher Gabriel Ortiz said his team had compiled a database of idiotic comments and that the new software would detect unintelligible remarks and either alert the writer to fix them or divert the message to the recipient's "junk mail." Easy dumb messages to filter: those with the tacky, immature repetition of a closing consonant, e.g., "That thing is amazinggggg!!!" More difficult: how to treat sarcasm and irony, in that smart writers sometimes deliberately use dumb statements to mock other writers.

Half Man, Half... Tree?

An Indonesian fisherman, Dede, age 35, is in reasonably good health except that his hands and feet resemble something out of the "Alien" movie series, with huge root-like growths that render his arms and legs useless, according to a November Discovery Channel TV program, "Half Man, Half Tree," reported on by London's Daily Telegraph. Dermatologist Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland flew to Indonesia and determined that Dede's condition was caused by a genetic inability to restrain the growth of warts ("cutaneous horns") produced by the human papillomavirus. Gaspari prescribed a regimen of vitamin A, which he said should reduce the size of the warts enough so that, with surgery, Dede could eventually use his hands again.

Identical at Birth... what about 80 years later?

Twin sisters Doris McAusland and Dora Bennett are 80 years old, live in Madison, Wis., apparently like and dislike the same foods, met their husbands on the same day, from the same church group, had hysterectomies at the same time, always get their hair done together, and, ever since they were toddlers, have worn identical outfits every day (except for one time that they had different shoes), according to a November CBS News report.

Um... is that good?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency made a special announcement in October that it is once again safe to eat squirrels in New Jersey. (In January, EPA had discovered LEAD in tissue samples from local squirrels, but later said the lead might have come from defects in the sampling machine.)

Funny? Weird? I certainly thought so!

Uglies is a book that's about a girl named Tally. In Tally's life, everything is perfect after you turn 16. The day of your 16th birthday, you undergo surgery that makes you pretty. What she doesn't know yet is that the surgery is very brain-damaging.

A couple months before the time of her designated surgery, Tally meets Shay. Shay is an ugly who has the exact same birthday as Tally. But a few days before their birthdays, Shay runs away to a place she calls, 'The Smoke.'

When the day finally comes for Tally to turn pretty, Tally is taken to Special Circumstances. Few uglies have ever been taken there, but many have heard of it. While she is there, she is questioned by a Special named Dr. Cable. Dr. Cable is sending Tally off into the wild to search for The Smoke. Basically, Tally is being used as a spy. But when Tally is sent into the Smoke, she finds that being pretty isn't a good thing all the time...

Do you want to know what happens next? Find this book yourself and read it! I rated it as an 8/10, because though it was an extremely good book, it was boring when I tried to reread it. This book is the first of an attention-grabbing trilogy. The other two books are Pretties and Specials.

Good Girl Gone Bad is the newest album by the loved Rihanna! Personally, I love this album. It includes the ever-so-popular songs 'Umbrella', 'Shut Up and Drive', and 'Hate That I Love You'. This is a habit of mine, but if I hear one good song from an album, I immediately go to look up the other songs in that album and listen to them on YouTube. Some of my favorite songs on that album are 'Breakin' Dishes', 'Say It', and 'Sell Me Candy'. The songs on that album are really good, even if all you do is buy the songs from the album that you hear on the radio.

Most people have heard the song Shawty by Plies and T-Pain. It is a really popular song that a lot of people like. Frankly I think that the song is repulsive. The lyrics are gross. The chorus is very catchy and it has a nice beat but that’s how artists get listeners. You shouldn’t support the artists if the song is gross. I think that this song is perverted and offensive and you shouldn’t listen to it.

Addicting Games is exactly what the title says. These games have great graphics, interesting ideas, and a mesmerizing power to draw you in. I personally recommend going to the Classic or Puzzle section, because these games are better for the mind. Some of the games I like are Wone, Balance, and Blockz. I would rate Addicting games.com an 8 out of 10, because some of the shooting games have a very immature side, and some inappropriate material. Steer clear of that junk, and you have a great website!
